Most Interesting Woman of the 20th Century: Clare Hollingworth

by 8d

Don't know if anyone on here knows who this person is, (I didn't). This is Clare Hollingworth and she died yesterday. This badass broke the news of troop movements on the Polish border in 1939, 3 days before the start of WW2 and then spent 40 years after the war reporting from some of the most conflict-ridden places of the 20th century.

But really the wars she covered weren't even the most interesting thing about her. this entire piece is almost too incredible to believe. -In 1939 She alerted the British embassy in Warsaw that the war had started by holding the phone out the window to capture the sound of tanks rolling by outside. -she drove a British diplomat's car flying a union jack from Katowice Poland into Germany past Nazi guards at the border (one of the most British things I've ever heard of). -She was embedded with British troops in North Africa and was buried in sand to conceal herself from a Nazi recon patrol that walked right by her. -in 1965 journalists were banned from reporting from the front of the Indo-Pakistani war so she went and got personal permission from Indira Gandhi -A sniper shot at her in Vietnam, only barely missing her head. -In 1989 (at nearly 80 years old) she climbed a lamp post in Tienanmen square to get a better glimpse at the uprising there. -She often slept on the floor even in old age to make sure she was still hardened and slept with her passport so she would be ready to go on a moment's notice.

She's the kind of person I never knew about but whose life is an inspiration. She did more than most in a position that some would find unsuitable for someone of her upbringing and gender. I wish that I heard more about her and people like her. These badass women exist but their stories need to be told by more people. Here is a more detailed account of her life from the New York Times, I 110% suggest reading it: https://www.nytimes.com/2017/01/10/business/media/clare-hollingworth-reporter-who-broke-news-of-world-war-ii-dies-at-105.html?smid=tw-share&_r=0
