Taking a nice walk around Chaparral park.
A few months earlier, this place was packed with pokezombies. Now it's back to just the occasional fisherman and pleasant dog walker.
Dusted off Pokemon Go app, might as well hatch some eggs with my walking.
I noticed all 3 Gym locations are owned by a guy named 'WildJoker' who's level 38, and his virtual critters all tower above 3300 in power level.
Jeez. I guess some people never stopped playing this.
As I'm going around the park, I glance at each passing person. Everyone seems to be busy doing something other than playing on their phone. So who is this Joker?
Then I catch a whiff of some skunky weed.
I follow it.
Off in the distance, shaded by a grove of trees, is a white haired hippie looking dude on a bench.
His cane lays quietly beside him, he's concentrating on his phone with a blunt in his mouth. I hear familiar bleeps and bloops faintly from his hands, matching the occasional puff of smoke whispering away from him.
I approach carefully, but audibly, so as not to startle him.
"Hi, are you Wild Joker?"
"I am," he says, casually over his shoulder.
"By your level, I thought you were a bot. That's insanely high."
"Nope, legit 38, man. I just never leave the park!" he laughs, arms open wide to the scene before him.
The cool breeze flows through him, and for a moment, I see just how genuinely happy this guy is. Not a care in the world, listening to the tweeting birds and quacking ducks.
He gestures for me to sit beside him on the bench. I do, shaking his hand.
He offers me a drag, I politely refuse but tell him I appreciate it. "Not much else to do," he smiles, "I'm retired."
I ask him about the new Pokemon, if they're out. He has them all already, and he shows them to me.
Since we're on the same Blue team, he shows me tips on how to get a gym to level 10 quickly. He teaches me every nuance of battle sequences too- like how to always get the perfect dodge.
"Don't worry about the cheaters, man - those guys that fool the game into thinking they're in Korea or some place. They get caught eventually," he offers.
After a few more battles, I thank him, and he says to come visit him any time, man.
Today I met somebody's grandpa that smokes prescribed pot in the park and plays Pokemon all day. That's probably the coolest retirement package I've seen so far. :)
